LIVING
WATER.
LIVING
CULTURE.
A cultural prototype bringing water, art and community together.
YUNOMI begins with something fundamental: clean drinking water.
At its heart is a water purification system. The container that carries it has become a cultural object, shaped by artists and places along its journey from Germany toward Kibera, Nairobi.
Around it, people, ideas and relationships become part of the story.
YUNOMI explores a new approach to infrastructure — bringing function, culture and community together from the beginning.
WATER × ART × COMMUNITY

The water system is infrastructure.
YUNOMI is the cultural prototype.
THE ORIGIN
An idea becomes YUNOMI.
YUNOMI was initiated by Onejiru Arfmann, artist, cultural entrepreneur, and Founder & Creative Director of FUTURE FEMALE AFRICA.
The idea began with a question:
What if essential water infrastructure could become the starting point for something larger?
Onejiru developed the name YUNOMI — derived from “YOU KNOW ME” — as well as its cultural concept and narrative, and brought together the relationships from which the cultural prototype could take shape.
The name carries another resonance: in Japanese, yunomi refers to an everyday tea cup — a vessel connected to water, ritual and daily life. An unexpected parallel to the idea YUNOMI has come to embody.
From this foundation, YUNOMI developed through collaboration — bringing together water, culture, community knowledge, artists and creative networks.
One idea. Many hands.
A cultural prototype built through collaboration.
WATER WITH A PURPOSE
Clean water is the
foundation of YUNOMI.
At its future home at Anno’s One Fine Day in Kibera, the purification system will provide clean drinking water and become part of the everyday infrastructure of the centre.
Grünbeck brings the technology and water expertise behind the system.
From this essential function, YUNOMI opens into something larger.
AN ARTWORK IN MOTION
The container carries the story of its journey on its surface.
In Höchstädt, where the water technology is assembled, artist Moritz Adam Schmitt creates the first chapter.
In Hamburg, artist Josephine Sagna continues the work — responding to what is already there and adding her own perspective.
From there, YUNOMI travels to Kibera with space for new artistic voices and perspectives to become part of the work.
Each place leaves a trace.
Each artist adds a chapter.
The story keeps moving.
DESTINATION: KIBERA
Kibera is where YUNOMI’s long-term chapter begins.
The water system will find its home at Anno’s One Fine Day, which has worked with children, young people and creative communities in Kibera for many years.
Together, Anno’s One Fine Day and FUTURE FEMALE AFRICA are developing a wider vision for a Creative & Digital Hub — connecting creativity, learning, digital opportunity and community.
YUNOMI becomes part of this future: providing clean drinking water while creating a point around which people, creativity and new possibilities can meet.
